    Prayer Lessons

    Pray scripture

One of the most important things I learned about prayer I learned at camp. I was a counselor at a Christian camp in the middle of nowhere for 4 summers and it was pivotal for the direction of my life. One of the things the camp leadership taught us during our Sunday night prayer meetings for the week ahead was how to pray Scripture.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be really simple. Just pick a relevant passage and pray it back to God. Yes, you have to know where to turn, and this post on 9 Healing Bible Verses on Miscarriage and the Loss of a Child is a great place to start.

    Pray in the need

Another important lesson I’ve learned about prayer came one day after church. It was several months after my son passed away and every Sunday I could barely hold the tears back. One of my friends asked me how I was doing that day and I was brutally honest. She didn’t shrink back from the pain and sadness I spewed out.

She didn’t say, “Oh, I’m sorry. I’ll be praying for you.” As in 👉 later. She prayed for me in my need. Like Jesus, she leaned in and said, “Let me pray for you right now.” And there in the back of the auditorium with our heads bowed and her hand on my shoulder, she prayed for me and over me.

She didn’t pray well-wishes. She prayed solid Bible truths about who God is and how he interacts with our pain. That kind of prayer is for the faint-of-heart.

but if not, we will still worship God.

    Pray for real treasure

Now, I want to add a word of caution. One thing I often see heart-broken mamas or well-meaning folks do - and I’ve even done this myself - is to find a verse that seems to give a promise for the kind of outcome you want (i.e. no miscarriages or infant loss, healing after prayer and anointing with oil, etc.), claim it, pray it, and if God chooses to answer with a no or not now, then we hold it against him.

Let us follow the example of Jesus here. He prayed that the cup of suffering would pass from him before he suffered torment and died on the cross, and yet he said, “Father, not my will, but yours be done.”

And don’t forget the three Hebrew children in the book of Daniel who refused to bow down to the king’s golden statue and faced the fiery furnace (aka a tortuous, public death punishment). They said, “ If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” (Daniel 3:17-18)

But if not… we will still worship God.

If you’re a mama who’s lost, you may not be able to say that yet. I totally get it. But do you want God to work that into you? Then pray that he would! ❤️

I could go on with other examples of Paul, Job, and the whole “hall of faith” in Hebrews 11.

Were these people superheroes of the faith? No, not really (other than Jesus, of course!). They simply had their eyes opened by God’s grace to see Jesus as the greatest treasure that he is.

We shouldn’t love and follow Jesus because he gives us a good life or good gifts. We should love Jesus because he is the greatest gift. That is the focus of the meta-narrative (big picture) of the Bible. So let our prayers for bereaved parents be aligned with that. Let us pray to see Jesus better, to know him better, and to love him better – no matter the brokenness that we experience or the dark valleys of death we pass through.

we shouldnt love and follow Jesus because he gives us a good life or good gifts - we should love Jesus because he is the greatest gift.

    Pray the Psalms

Here are some Psalms that you could pray through for, and even with, a bereaved parent for comfort and solace:

    • Psalm 34: This psalm speaks of seeking the Lord and His deliverance in times of trouble, and it reassures that God is near to the brokenhearted.

    • Psalm 42: The psalmist expresses a deep longing for God's presence and acknowledges the pain of the soul. It ends with a declaration of hope and trust in God's salvation.

    • Psalm 46: This psalm talks about God being our refuge and strength in times of trouble, reminding us that He is present even when the earth gives way.

    • Psalm 91: Often referred to as the "Psalm of Protection," it speaks of finding shelter in God's presence and the assurance that He watches over us.

    • Psalm 121: A psalm of trust and reliance on God's help, acknowledging that our help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

    • Psalm 139: This psalm celebrates God's intimate knowledge of us, even in our most vulnerable moments. It can bring comfort knowing that we are never alone.

    • Psalm 143: The psalmist cries out for God's guidance and deliverance, acknowledging their own weakness and seeking God's mercy and comfort.

    • Psalm 147: This psalm speaks of God's care for the brokenhearted and His power to heal and restore.

    • Psalm 73: While not directly about grief, this psalm addresses the struggles of the heart and questions about life's injustices. It can offer perspective and a reminder of God's ultimate justice.

    • Psalm 103: A psalm of praise and thanksgiving that focuses on God's goodness, mercy, and compassion, which can bring comfort in times of sorrow.

As the bereaved mom or dad prays through these Psalms, they can personalize the verses, pouring out her own feelings, pain, and questions to God. The Psalms provide a way to connect with God's comfort and hope while navigating the difficult journey of grief.

    Prayers for Bereaved Parents

Pray that God would meet her in her need

If you had a chance to take a look at some of the Psalms I listed above, you’ll notice that the psalmists often asks God to “hear my plea” or asks him to “not hide his face from me.” The Psalmists wants God to see his need and meet him there. We can pray the same for mamas who’ve lost a baby.

I’ll give some prayer examples throughout the rest of this post along with supporting Bible verses.

    Prayer:

"Dear Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts heavy with sorrow on behalf of [Mother's Name], who is enduring the pain of losing her precious child. Lord, we ask that You, the God of all comfort, would wrap Your arms of love around her. In her time of need, be her refuge and strength. Let Your presence be a source of solace, and grant her the courage to face each day. We lift up her broken heart to You, knowing that You are near to the brokenhearted and save the crushed in spirit. Provide her with Your peace that surpasses all understanding, and may she find rest for her weary soul in You. As she walks through this valley of darkness, may she feel Your guiding hand and know that You are with her every step of the way. In the name of Jesus, our Rock and Redeemer, we pray. Amen."

    Supporting Bible Verses:

    • 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (ESV): "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God."

    • Psalm 34:18 (ESV): "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

    • Psalm 46:1 (ESV): "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

    • Psalm 73:26 (ESV): "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

    • Psalm 147:3 (ESV): "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

    • Isaiah 41:10 (ESV): "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

    • Matthew 5:4 (ESV): "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."

    • Matthew 11:28 (ESV): "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

    • Romans 8:38-39 (ESV): "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

May this prayer and these scripture verses bring comfort and hope to the grieving mother, reminding her of God's tender care and His promise to be her source of strength and solace in times of need.

Pray that her needs would be met

Philippians 4:19 reminds us that God will supply all our needs according to His riches in glory through Christ Jesus. Just as He cares for the sparrows (Matthew 10:29-31), He cares for us, tending to our emotional, spiritual, and physical needs.

By casting our anxieties on Him (1 Peter 5:7), we open ourselves to His loving care and restoration. I know it’s deep. But as we grieve, let us remember that God's grace is sufficient, and His comfort is available to us as we pour out our hearts in prayer (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

We can and should pray these Scriptures back to God as we ask him to meet the needs of a mama who’s lost.

    Prayer:

"Gracious Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts heavy for [Mother's Name], who is walking through the deep pain of losing her beloved child. Lord, we lift her up to You, knowing that You are the ultimate provider and sustainer. Please meet her needs in every aspect of her life. Emotionally, be her comforter and healer. Physically, grant her strength and rest. Spiritually, draw her closer to You, giving her the peace that surpasses understanding. Relationally, surround her with a supportive community that shows Your love. We are reminded in Your Word that You are near to the brokenhearted, and Your grace is sufficient for us. May she find solace in Your promises and hope in Your eternal love. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen."

    Supporting Bible Verses:

    • Philippians 4:19 (ESV): "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus."

    • Psalm 34:18 (ESV): "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

    • Psalm 147:3 (ESV): "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

    • Matthew 5:4 (ESV): "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."

    • Isaiah 40:31 (ESV): "But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."

    • Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV): "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

    • Romans 15:13 (ESV): "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope."

    • Psalm 91:1-2 (ESV): "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, 'My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

May this prayer and these scripture verses provide comfort, strength, and assurance to the grieving mother, reminding her that she is not alone and that God is faithful to meet her needs in every area of her life.

Pray that her faith would not fail

    Luke 22:31-32 (ESV):

"Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers."

In this passage, Jesus is addressing Simon Peter, assuring him that despite the challenges and trials he will face, Jesus has interceded in prayer for him that his faith would remain strong. It's a beautiful reminder of Jesus' care and concern for his disciples, even in the face of difficulties.

This is the verse the Holy Spirit brought to my mind when I felt like giving up on trusting God. My son was in the NICU, and it was so stinkin’ hard. I wanted to forget God because it was hard to trust in what I couldn’t see. But all I could see was painful and gloomy with death looming ahead of us. So then the Holy Spirit brought another verse to mind, “Lord, where else can we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (my paraphrase of John 6:68).

That mini God-conversation pushed me more into His Word. The Bible was our lifeline in the hospital (and since). It was the only way we could stay sane when the doctors kept bringing us more hard news.

Praying for a mother who has lost a baby that her faith remains steadfast is necessary, honestly. Here's an example prayer along with supporting Bible verses:

    Prayer:

"Dear Heavenly Father, in this time of profound sorrow, we lift up [Mother's Name] before You. We pray that amidst the pain and heartache of losing her baby, her faith would not fail. Strengthen her, Lord, with Your unfailing presence and grace. Just as You were with Job, Naomi, and Paul in their trials, be with [Mother's Name] and grant her the strength to hold onto Jesus in the midst of this storm. May Your Word be a source of comfort, reminding her that nothing can separate her from Your love (Romans 8:38-39) and that You are the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). Help her lean on Your promises, trust in Your plan, and find solace in the hope of eternal life through Christ. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen."

    Supporting Bible Verses:

    • Romans 8:38-39 (ESV): "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

    • Isaiah 41:10 (ESV): "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

    • Psalm 34:18 (ESV): "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

    • Job 13:15 (ESV): "Though he slay me, I will hope in him; yet I will argue my ways to his face."

As you pray for a mama’s faith to not fail, these verses can provide comfort and assurance, reminding her of God's constant presence and His promise to carry her through even the darkest times.

I have prayed for you that you faith would not fail - Luke 22:31-32

Pray that she would feel supported and loved by Jesus through his body the Church

    Prayer:

"Dear Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up [Mother's Name] to Your loving care. We know that Your Church is a place of comfort, support, and love. We pray that in the midst of her pain and loss, [Mother's Name] would tangibly feel Your presence through the body of believers. May Your Church extend open arms of compassion, reminding her of Your boundless love. Just as Your Word says in Romans 12:15, 'Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep,' we pray that Your people would come alongside [Mother's Name], sharing in her grief and offering the comfort that only Your Spirit can provide. Let [Mother's Name] experience the strength and unity of the Church as they reach out in love, fulfilling Your commandment to love one another as You have loved us (John 13:34-35). May she find solace, encouragement, and a renewed sense of hope through the support of Your people. In the precious name of Jesus, we pray. Amen."

    Supporting Bible Verses:

    • Romans 12:15 (ESV): "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep."

    • John 13:34-35 (ESV): "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

By praying in this manner, you are asking for the grieving mother to experience the tangible love and support of the Church community, providing her with the comfort and encouragement she needs during this difficult time.

Pray that God would help her through the hormonal changes

Honestly, this is for all moms, postpartum or not, but especially those who’ve lost a child no matter how old they were in or out of the womb.

    Prayer:

"Dear Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up [Mother’s name] who has experienced the deep loss of a baby. Lord, we know that postpartum hormonal changes can amplify the emotional and physical challenges this mama faces. We pray that Your grace and comfort would envelop her during this time. Please grant her strength to navigate the complex emotions that come with grief and hormonal shifts. Just as You are the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-4), we ask that You would bring solace to her heart and mind. Help her to recognize that her feelings are valid and that You are near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). Guide her through the journey of healing and restoration, knowing that Your promises remain unshakable. In her weakness, may she experience Your strength (Isaiah 40:29), and in her sorrow, may she find the peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Surround her with a community of understanding and supportive believers who can offer a listening ear, a helping hand, and a comforting presence. In the name of Jesus, who understands our pain, we pray.

    • Isaiah 40:29 (ESV): "He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength."

    • Philippians 4:7 (ESV): "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Through this prayer, you're asking for God's comfort, strength, and support to surround this mama as she navigates the complexities of grief and postpartum hormonal changes.

Pray that she would lean into Jesus

    Prayer:

"Dear Heavenly Father, we lift up [Mother's Name] to You, a mother who has experienced the heart-wrenching loss of a baby. In this time of deep sorrow and uncertainty, we pray that she would lean into You, Jesus, as her ultimate source of strength, comfort, and refuge. May she find solace in Your words from Matthew 11:28-30, where You invite those who are weary and burdened to come to You, promising rest for their souls. Lord, help [Mother's Name] to release her burdens and sorrows into Your capable hands, trusting that You are the One who can carry her through this difficult journey. Just as You were a friend to Martha and Mary in their grief (John 11), be a friend to [Mother's Name], offering her the peace and understanding that only You can provide. Let her feel Your presence surrounding her, bringing the assurance that she is never alone. May her relationship with You deepen as she leans into Your love, grace, and wisdom. In Your precious name, Jesus, we pray. Amen."

    Supporting Bible Verses:

    • Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV): "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

    • John 11:33-35 (ESV): "When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. And he said, 'Where have you laid him?' They said to him, 'Lord, come and see.' Jesus wept."

Through this prayer, you're asking for the bereaved mother to find comfort, strength, and a deepened relationship with Jesus as she leans into His presence during her time of grief.

Prayers for bereaved mom who lost a child.

Pray that she would treasure Jesus

    Prayer:

"Dear Heavenly Father, in the midst of [Mother's Name]'s profound loss of her precious baby, we humbly come before You, asking that You reveal Yourself to her as her greatest treasure, her unwavering hope, and her Redeemer. Lord, we know that in times of intense sorrow, it's easy to feel lost and adrift, but we pray that You would draw [Mother's Name] close to You. Open her heart to the truth of Your Word and the beauty of Your presence. As it says in Psalm 16:11, 'You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.' May [Mother's Name] experience the fullness of joy that comes from knowing You intimately. Help her recognize that in You, she finds the One who can bring purpose from pain and restoration from brokenness. Lord, reveal Yourself as her Redeemer, as the One who brings healing and hope, just as You promised in Isaiah 41:10, 'Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.' We pray that [Mother's Name] would discover in You a treasure that surpasses all others—a treasure that anchors her heart, restores her spirit, and guides her through the darkness. In the name of Jesus, our ultimate hope and Redeemer, we pray. Amen."

    Supporting Bible Verses:

    • Psalm 16:11 (ESV): "You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."

Through this prayer, you're asking for the grieving mother to find Jesus as her ultimate treasure, her source of hope, and her Redeemer who can bring light to her darkest moments.

Pray that you would have the wisdom to know how to help and the ability to do so

    Prayer:

"Gracious Heavenly Father, I come before You seeking Your wisdom and guidance on how I can support [Mother's Name], who is navigating the painful journey of losing her baby. Help me to be a vessel of Your love, comfort, and understanding in her life. Grant me the discernment to know when to listen sympathetically and when to speak words of comfort and encouragement. Just as it says in Proverbs 12:25, 'Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad,' may my words be a source of comfort and gladness for [Mother's Name], even if I don’t see this fruit right away. Give me the opportunity to come alongside her, whether by preparing a meal, offering a shoulder to lean on, or simply being present during moments of silence. Guide my steps when suggesting truth, so that I may gently point her to You, who is the ultimate source of hope and healing. Let Your words dwell richly in my heart, so that I may share them with grace and sensitivity. I ask that You would provide me with the right timing and words when offering counsel, reminding [Mother's Name] of Your promises and the truths found in Your Word. Above all, help me to be a reflection of Your love and compassion, ultimately pointing her to the comforting embrace of Jesus. In His name, I pray. Amen."

    Supporting Bible Verses:

    • Proverbs 12:25 (ESV): "Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad."

As you pray this prayer, you're asking for the wisdom and discernment to support the grieving mother in meaningful ways, to be a listening ear, a source of comfort, and a guide toward the hope found in Jesus.

Pray that God would use the legacy of her child for His glory

    Prayer:

"Almighty God, I come before You with a heavy heart, lifting up [Mother's Name] who has experienced the painful loss of her precious baby. Lord, in the midst of this sorrow, I pray that You would work in a remarkable way to use the legacy of her baby for Your glory. Just as You promise in Romans 8:28, 'And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose,' I trust that You can take even the most painful experiences and weave them into a beautiful tapestry that brings honor to Your name. Help [Mother's Name] to see that the impact of her baby's life can be far-reaching and long-lasting. May the memory of her baby inspire acts of kindness, compassion, and love in ways that point people toward Jesus. Lord, as You turned mourning into dancing for King David in Psalm 30:11, I pray that You would ultimately bring healing and joy from this deep sorrow, even if it’s hard to fathom that right now. Use [Mother's Name]'s story to encourage others in their own trials, showcasing Your unwavering faithfulness. Let the legacy of her baby be a testament to Your grace, love, and wisdom. May [Mother's Name] find solace in knowing that You can bring beauty from ashes and that her baby's life story can continue to shine brightly for Your glory. In the name of Jesus, who conquered death and offers us eternal hope, I pray. Amen."

    Supporting Bible Verses:

    • Romans 8:28 (ESV): "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

    • Psalm 30:11 (ESV): "You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness."

Through this prayer, you're asking for God's divinely, wise purpose to shine through the legacy of this sweet baby's life, ultimately bringing comfort and hope to the grieving mother and pointing others to Jesus.

Prayer for a mom who lost a son or daughter.

Pray that the mama (and dad) would grieve well

While obviously all these prayers could be for both parents, I especially was thinking of both moms and dads here because of how differently they often grieve. It’s important prayers for bereaved parents include this, because there can naturally be misunderstanding, miscommunication, and pain from not one or both parents not grieving well.

    Prayer:

"Gracious and Compassionate Father, I come before You on behalf of [Mother's Name] and [Father's Name], who are enduring the painful journey of losing their beloved baby. Lord, I lift up their grieving hearts to You, asking for Your tender presence to surround them. May they grieve well, allowing themselves to feel the depths of their loss and to process their emotions fully. It’s completely valid because death is terrible. Just as Your Word says in Psalm 34:18, 'The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit,' draw them close to Your heart as they navigate this difficult season. Grant them the strength to wrestle with the difficult questions and emotions that arise, knowing that You are the One they can turn to with their doubts, pains, and uncertainties. Help them remember that even in the midst of their struggle, You are still sovereign, good, and wise. As it says in Proverbs 3:5-6, 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.' May they not run to excess work, vices, escapes, etc., but may they run to you. I pray that [Mother's Name] and [Father's Name] would find comfort in resting in Your unchanging love and wisdom, even when the path seems unclear. Let Jesus be their strength, knowing that You hold their precious baby in Your care. Through their grief, may they ultimately experience the truth of Psalm 30:5, 'Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.' Comfort them with Your presence, guide them through their grief journey, and help them find solace in the midst of their pain. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen."

    Supporting Bible Verses:

    • Psalm 34:18 (ESV): "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

Kathy Clum - prayers for mom who lost a son

As a mom who’s suffered the loss of my baby, I know deep heart pain.

I tried to run from God, but he convinced me of his love and comforted my heart with hope and healing in Jesus.

Now, it’s my mission to share this same comfort with others who’ve experienced the pain of miscarriage and infant loss.
