    First off, I take the topic of these posts very seriously. If I'm going to be sharing what God says, then that’s a big deal. I do NOT want to be wrong. Nobody likes to be misrepresented, especially God.

    So in my effort to accurately share what God says about losing a baby, I’ll make every effort to be really clear what my thoughts are versus what God says in the Bible.

    Losing a baby is one of the hardest things anyone can go through. We intuitively know that this is not the way it’s supposed to be – children dying before their parents.

    I know this personally.

    This is Part 1 of 2.
    In this post, we talk about:

    Please read Part 2 and learn:

    It’s not supposed to be this way

    We can read from Genesis how God initially created the world without death. God's original intention was for humanity and all living creatures to experience life in a state of harmony, abundance, and immortality.

    However, the reality of a baby's death and the existence of suffering are complex topics that require a deeper understanding and study of Scripture.

    When God originally created the earth and Adam and Eve the way Genesis describes it, there was no mention of death or suffering.

    God's design was for humanity to live in perpetual fellowship with Him and with each other.

    Tragically, this state of perfection was disrupted when Adam and Eve chose to disobey God's command and ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Their disobedience introduced sin into the world and brought about the consequences of death and suffering (Genesis 3:1-19).

    Sin separated humanity from God's perfect design and introduced brokenness into the world, affecting every. single. thing. in creation. It changed what should be into what is.

    There’s no denying it. Life as we know it is broken.

    The Bible acknowledges the reality of suffering and the painful experiences of life, including the loss of innocent lives, such as the death of babies (such as miscarriage or infant loss). While it may be challenging to comprehend why God allows such suffering, the Bible communicates God’s thoughts that he wants to share with us about it.

    First, the Bible emphasizes that God is a God of love and compassion (Psalm 145:9). He grieves over the suffering and loss experienced by His creation. Jesus Himself highly valued children and expressed deep compassion for them, even saying that the kingdom of God belongs to them (Matthew 19:14).

    Second, the Bible teaches that death and suffering are a result of the brokenness introduced by sin. The consequences of Adam and Eve's disobedience affected the entire human race (Romans 5:12). However, it is important to note that God does not desire anyone to suffer or experience death (Ezekiel 33:11).

    He is a God of life and restoration.

    It doesn’t stop there. God doesn’t say “What a terrible ending… Oh well” then check out, and neither should we.

    It won’t be this way forever

    The Bible offers hope beyond the pain and loss of this present world. It speaks of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, who came to conquer sin and death. 🙌

    Through His death and resurrection, Jesus offers the promise of eternal life to all who trust in Him (John 3:16). For followers of Jesus, our hope lies in the assurance of a future resurrection and the restoration of all things (1 Corinthians 15:22).

    While the loss of a baby's life is deeply tragic and painful, the Bible teaches that God's love and purposes extend beyond our earthly existence. It assures believers that those who die in infancy or before being able to comprehend the Gospel are entrusted to God's mercy and care (Matthew 19:14).

    God's justice, mercy, and perfect love will ultimately prevail, even with going through the deepest, darkest valley of death. We don’t have to fear evil (Psalm 23).

    Some of my favorite Bible passages on God reversing the curse, specifically in regards to children dying are:

    Revelation 21:1-4  “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

    Isaiah 65:20 “No more shall there be in it
        an infant who lives but a few days,
        or an old man who does not fill out his days,
    for the young man shall die a hundred years old,
        and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed.”

    Isaiah 11:6-9 “The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
        and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
    and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
        and a little child shall lead them.
    The cow and the bear shall graze;
        their young shall lie down together;
        and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
    The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
        and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.
    They shall not hurt or destroy
        in all my holy mountain;
    for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
        as the waters cover the sea.

    So we see that God originally created the world without death, intending for humanity to experience eternal life in a state of harmony. However, the introduction of sin through human disobedience disrupted this perfection and beauty, leading to death and suffering. While the reality of a baby's death and the existence of suffering can be challenging to understand, the Bible assures believers that God is a God of love, compassion, and restoration. It offers hope through the redemptive work of Jesus the Messiah and the promise of eternal life.
