About Kathy Clum short bio

Hi, I’m Kathy Clum.

Founder

In 2015, my world turned upside down when I lost my firstborn child,Jack, just two weeks after he was born. At first, I tried to run from the pain of death and all that reminded me of it, but I soon found that that didn’t work. Jesus was the only One who could bring life to those death pains I felt inside.

  • The Bible verse that became my lifeline was Psalm 73:26: "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart."

After going through my own journey of grief and healing, I felt this pull on my heart to help other moms walking a similarly painful path. I started by sharing what God had done in my life by talking about it with anyone who would listen—both one-on-one and public speaking. And you know what? People responded. They shared how they were impacted by my story and what God has taught me. So in 2023, New Mercy Moms came to life.

New Mercy Moms is all about giving other grieving moms what I needed (and still need): a reliable, biblically-grounded place to find hope after loss. It’s not about quick fixes; it’s about real hope that comes only from Jesus.

The Need

The statistics on child loss in the U.S. are both staggering and heart-wrenching. Every year, over 1,000,000 children die in the United States. That represents so many grieving mothers and families.

  • The annual number of babies and children who die in the United States:

    • Miscarriages: Annually, there are about 900,000 to 1 million miscarriages in the U.S., with more than 500,000 of these occurring in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy.

    • Infant Deaths: The total number of infant deaths in 2022 was 20,538. Additionally, there are about 3,400 sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) each year in the U.S..

    • Stillbirths: About 21,000 stillbirths were reported in the United States in 2020 and 2021.

    • Child Deaths (Ages 1-14): For children aged 1-14 years, there were 9,791 in 2021.

    • Teen Deaths (Ages 15-19): The number of deaths for adolescents aged 15–19 years was 13,407 in 2021.

Combining these statistics, we can estimate that each year in the United States, there are over 1,044,000 children from 0-19 yrs. old who’ve passed away.

Those numbers represent so many grieving mothers and families. Despite its frequency, the loss of a child — and the deep grief and pain that come with it — remain topics that are often hushed up, making the journey even more lonely for those who are suffering.

Our Mission

Our mission is clear — Create biblically grounded and theologically rich resources that address the needs of mothers who have experienced the death of a child, equipping them to find the hope and healing found in Jesus. We aim not only to support them in their journey but also to empower them to help others facing similar tragedies.

  • The statistics given above are precisely why New Mercy Moms exists: to help these grieving mothers who may not know where to turn or who to talk to, and to meet them right where they are with the hope in the Good News of Jesus.

Because no mom should have to walk through this dark valley alone, we provide Christ-centered resources that direct them back to the unwavering hope and healing that can only be found in Jesus.

In short, we’re all about empowering mothers who have faced the death of a child to find their hope and healing in Jesus. We can’t find this hope and healing in a generic “faith” or in some vague “higher power.” We can find it only in Jesus Christ, who loves us (John 3:16), personally suffered hardship and loss (Isaiah 53:3), and has the power we don’t to provide healing and hope (Revelation 21:4). Through Him, we find the grace and grit to continue on.

Our Actions

In keeping with 2 Corinthians 1:3-5, the purpose and vision of New Mercy Moms is to provide caring, biblical help and healing to comfort, equip, and empower mothers grieving the death of a child.

Our vision impacts more than individual healing, recognizing that helping a mother strengthens a family, bolstering a community, and, ultimately, has the potential to change the world.

We are not just here to offer comforting words. We aim to direct you straight to the Gospel, right where you are—in your questioning, in your grief, in your search for understanding.

How Do We Do It?

  • Imagine sitting down for coffee with a friend who has walked your path, who has held others' hands through a similar loss, and who has witnessed the transformative grace of God firsthand. Our blog aims to be that friend—touching on the practical, diving into the emotional, and always grounding you in truth straight from the Bible.

  • These are not your run-of-the-mill Care Boxes. Each one is curated with intention, filled with hand-selected Gospel-centered resources that are designed not just to comfort but to remind your heart of God’s loving presence in your darkest moments. Our goal is to fund and send out 100 Care Boxes to grieving mothers in time for Mother’s Day.

  • Designed to meet you where you are, our courses do not offer just practical tools. They are steeped in Biblical wisdom to help you to confront and navigate complex emotions like fear and anxiety, all while drawing you closer to Jesus. It’s like theology meets your day planner.

With interviews from Professional Biblical Counselors and Therapists, we are bringing together experts who specialize in grief counseling to share their wisdom and strategies for healing. They will provide valuable perspectives on navigating the emotional and spiritual challenges that come with the loss of a child.

Our Current Initiative

As we look ahead, New Mercy Moms is excited to share our upcoming initiatives designed to further support and uplift mothers facing unimaginable loss. Our roadmap outlines new programs and expansions we are eagerly anticipating.

  • In March, we are proud to introduce our Care Boxes initiative, a tangible expression of our commitment to meeting bereaved mothers right where they are in their grief. Understanding the profound pain of losing a child, we have crafted two versions of Care Boxes:

    • For Miscarriage and Infant Loss: This Care Box is designed to tenderly address the needs and emotions of mothers who have experienced the early loss of a child, providing comfort and acknowledgment of their grief.

    • For Older Child Loss: Tailored to mothers who have lost an older child, this Care Box aims to offer solace and understanding, recognizing the unique challenges and depth of their sorrow.

These Care Boxes are a free resource, sent with love and care, to remind mothers they are not alone in their journey of grief.

  • Starting in April, we began shipping our Care Boxes, and were able to have over a dozen delivered in time for Mother's Day. This timing is intentional, acknowledging that Mother's Day can be a particularly challenging time for bereaved mothers. Our hope is that these Care Boxes will bring a measure of comfort and recognition during a season that may feel isolating.

The cost to launch Care Boxes is $100 each.

  • "In the Valley with Jesus" is a heartfelt video series created for mothers navigating the unimaginable grief of losing a child. Featuring biblical counselors and therapists, the series offers gentle counsel and encouragement to help you find hope and healing in your darkest moments. Each video answers the question, “What would you say to a mom who has just lost her child?” with compassion, wisdom, and a Christ-centered perspective.

Whether you're seeking comfort for yourself or looking to support a grieving friend, this series provides a pathway to connect with counselors for continued support and healing.

By purchasing this series, you are not only receiving valuable support, but you are also helping to fund Care Boxes, bringing comfort to grieving mothers in need.

Statement of Faith

  1. We believe the Bible to be the only inspired, infallible, authoritative Word of God. (Psalm 119:160; Romans 15:4; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; 2 Peter 1: 19-21; Revelation 22:18-19)

  2. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Colossians 1:16-18; 1 John 5:7)

  3. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory. (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18-25; Mark 14:62; 16:19; Acts 1:9-11; Acts 4:10-12, 5:30-31; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 7:25)

  4. We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful people, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential. (John 3:16-18; Acts 16:31; Romans 6:23; Romans 10:9, 10; 1 Corinthians 15:3.4; Ephesians 2:8, 9; 2 Peter 3:9)

  5. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life. (John 3:5-7; John 14:16-18, 26; John 16:7-8; Ephesians 1:13-14)

  6. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation. (1 Corinthians 15; 2 Corinthians 5:6-8; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Revelation 20-22)

  7. We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 15:5-6)
