Let's dive into our top picks.

Grieving the Child I Never Knew

I love this little journal by Kathe Wunnenberg. It was a gentle help through incredibly deep sorrow. My mom had given this journal to me shortly after our baby passed away. It really helped me process through my grief in a healthier way.

    Therefore I have hope

If you’ve ever gone through hard times, care about someone who’s gone through hard times, or counsel anyone who’s gone through hard times, then you should read this book. Cameron Cole shares the story of his loss along with 12 truths that comfort, sustain, and redeem in tragedy. I read this on the 3rd anniversary of our son’s passing and it was so encouraging, and I’ve come back to it several times to remind myself of the truths shared. This is a helpful read no matter where you are on your grief journey, whether it’s been a few weeks or several years and whether you feel like you are closer to God or further from him.

I Will Carry You: The Sacred Dance of Grief and Joy

I read this book on an airplane ride and wept like a baby (I’m a weeper). Trigger warning: this book shares Angie Smith’s loss which will probably be a trigger if you have also lost a baby. It is an incredibly hard story, BUT the reason I recommend this book is because I came away in utter awe of how God carried them and gave them faith through loss. It was very inspiring for me. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down because I knew I wanted faith like that.

    Hope For A Mom’s Heart

This small book is huge in impact. It really meets a bereaved mama’s heart where it’s at with gentle encouragement and hope from Scripture. It talks about both a mother and father’s grief, carefully answers the questions all mom’s who’ve lost have, and gives very practical help for next steps. Merri Ellen Wright shares her stories of loss (yes, multiple losses), but if it’s too hard to read other’s stories at this time then they can be easily skipped. This book is incredibly helpful for a recent loss or even a year or two out because of how it meets the mom in the wake of loss.

Safe In The Arms Of God: Truth from Heaven About the Death of a Child

John MacArthur’s book is like reading encouraging pastoral counsel that answers hard questions like “Where is my baby?” “Why did my baby have to die?” and “How can we help those who’ve lost?” I found this book to be helpful when I felt ready to really process through what the Bible says about the death of a child.

Suffering: Gospel Hope When Life Doesn’t Make Sense

I’ve only gotten to read some excerpts and it’s amazing! It’s totally on my to-read list! Paul Tripp touches on the exact things I struggle with when I’m going through a hard time: fear, envy, doubt, denial. And then shows the reader God’s character to bring true, deep comfort. It looks so good!

Spurgeon’s Sorrows: Realistic Hope for those who Suffer from Depression

While not specifically geared towards bereaved parents, this book by Zach Eswine helped me feel heard and seen in my depression after loss. My husband also read this book and it really helped him to better understand what I was going through emotionally, mentally, and spiritually and equipped him to be a better listener and support through my pain. I recommend this book to those who’ve suffered loss and those who want to help.

Heaven: A Comprehensive Guide to Everything the Bible Says About Our Eternal Home

Randy Alcorn’s book Heaven is so helpful for parents who’ve lost a baby. While not specifically written for bereaved parents, here’s why I loved it: I got to learn about my baby’s home. It’s a huge book, but don’t let that stop you. If big books intimidate you, read the first part about why heaven is so wonderful and then skip to the part about babies in heaven. I even did a book study with some friends who had lost loved ones and we were all so encouraged by Randy’s book. I highly recommend it.

Dealing with the loss of a pregnancy or a newborn can be an incredibly difficult and emotional journey. We hope that this curated list of books has provided you with valuable insights, comfort, and support during this challenging time.

Remember, everyone's journey through grief is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. However, by reading these books, you can gain a better understanding of your emotions and learn how to navigate the healing process in your own way.

We encourage you to share this list with friends or family members who may also be seeking support and guidance. By sharing these resources, you can help others feel less alone and provide them with the tools they need to begin the healing process.

Thank you for taking the time to read this blog post. We hope that you have found our book recommendations helpful, and that they have provided you with comfort and support during this difficult time.
