    Oh dear…

While I’m thankful you are here on this page looking for healing Bible verses to comfort a grieving mother after the death of a child, I am so sorry that this is something you or a loved one has experienced.

Experiencing the pain of losing your child is one of the hardest things any parent can go through. It’s life-changing and is not something you can just “get over” with a few Bible verses. It takes a work of God through his Word, the Bible; people pouring into you; the Holy Spirit changing you; and lots and lots of time.

The death of your child is so. freaking. hard. I know firsthand.

And while suffering and grief will likely last for years or a lifetime, it doesn't have to be void of hope or some sort of healing in the process.

This is also said from a place of experience, both personally and from helping others.

    Story time…

Emily sat in her quiet corner of the house, tears streaming down her face. It had been a few months since she experienced the devastating loss of her child. The pain still lingered, deep and raw within her. The dreams and hopes she had nurtured for her child were shattered, leaving her feeling empty and broken.

In the midst of her grief, Emily found herself turning to the Bible, seeking solace and answers. She longed for a glimmer of hope, something to hold onto in the midst of the darkness. As she opened the pages of her well-worn Bible, she came across Psalm 34:18: "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

Those words resonated deeply within Emily's soul. It was as if God Himself was speaking directly to her, assuring her of His presence in her pain. She clung to that verse, reading it over and over again, allowing its truth to seep into her wounded heart.

As the days turned into weeks and months, Emily continued to immerse herself in the healing Scripture verses for her grieving heart. Matthew 5:4 reminded her that she was not alone in her mourning, that there was comfort to be found. Psalm 147:3 reassured her that God was the ultimate healer of her broken heart.

But it was Psalm 139:13-16 that truly touched Emily's spirit. As she read those verses, she pictured God intricately weaving together her precious child in her womb.

She realized that even though her baby's time on earth was cut short, that tiny life had a purpose and was fearfully and wonderfully made.

Through her journey of reading and meditating on these verses, Emily began to experience a glimmer of hope and healing. She realized that while her pain might never fully disappear, she could find comfort in God's promises after experiencing child loss.

She allowed herself to grieve, but also embraced the assurance that her child was held in the arms of a loving God.

As Emily shared her story with others who had experienced similar losses, she discovered that her journey of finding hope and healing after child loss through the Bible resonated with many who also lost. She became a source of support and encouragement, pointing others to the verses that had brought her comfort.

Emily was a little surprised to find that sharing helped bring a little more healing as well. In sharing her journey, Emily inspires others to turn to the healing verses of the Bible, knowing that they too can find comfort and restoration in the arms of Jesus, the Good Shepherd.

While there aren’t specific Bible verses for miscarriage or child loss, Emily's story is a testament to the transformative power of God's Word in the midst of tragedy like child loss. It reminds us that even in the darkest moments of our lives, there is a flicker of light that can guide us towards healing and hope because of Jesus.

The Bible has passages for grieving mothers that offer a lifeline for solace, reassurance, and the promise of a future where tears will be wiped away and pain will be no more.

Bible Verses to Comfort a Grieving Mother

While I’ll only quote 1-3 verses below for each of the 9 passages, please also open a physical copy of the Bible.  By looking up these passages and considering their context (i.e. who’s speaking, who’s listening, are they suffering too? etc.), you can gain even greater meaning from these verses. Let us delve into these healing scriptures and allow them to bring solace and hope into our lives.

    1

Psalm 34:18: "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

The words of Psalm 34:18 remind us that even in the depths of our pain and sorrow, the Lord is intimately close to us. He not only understands our brokenness but also has the power to rescue us from the deepest heart pain. This verse serves as a profound assurance that God is aware of our anguish and offers His comforting presence as we navigate the path of healing.

    2

Matthew 5:4: "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."

In the Beatitudes, Jesus declares that those who mourn are blessed, for they will receive comfort. This verse speaks directly to the grief-stricken hearts of individuals who have experienced child loss. It serves as a reminder that even in our deepest sorrow, there is a promise of solace and support from God himself. Jesus sees our pain and promises to bring comfort to our weary souls.

    3

Psalm 147:3: "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

The book of Psalms provides us with numerous expressions of human suffering and lamentation (aka pouring out our grief in words to God). Psalm 147:3 assures us that God is not only aware of our broken hearts but also possesses the power to heal and restore us. Just as a physician skillfully binds up physical wounds, the Maker of everything tenderly tends to the wounds of our hearts. Through His love and compassion, He brings healing to our shattered spirits.

    4

Isaiah 49:15-16a: "Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands."

This is one I can meditate on/think about for a while because it really blows my mind. In Isaiah 49:15-16a, God employs a powerful metaphor to express His unfailing love and care for His people. Just as a mother's love for her nursing child is deep and enduring, God's love for us is even more profound. He reassures us that He will never forget us, even when it seems that our pain and loss have been overlooked by the world. These verses serve as a poignant reminder that we are etched in the very palms of God's hands, always cherished and remembered by Him.

    5

2 Corinthians 1:3-4: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God."

The apostle Paul, in his second letter to the Corinthians, proclaims that God is not only the source of all comfort but also equips us to extend that comfort to others. Through our own experiences of affliction and the solace we receive from God, we become equipped to offer comfort to those who are hurting. These verses remind us that our own healing journey can be transformed into a means of support and encouragement for others who face similar trials.

    6

Psalm 30:5: "For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning."

Psalm 30:5 provides a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness of grief. It assures us that although we may weep and mourn through the night (✋ Been there. Done that. Many times.), joy will eventually arrive. This verse acknowledges the ultimately temporary nature of sorrow and points us toward the promise of lasting joy in the presence of God (which reminds me of Psalm 16:11). While grief may be a present reality, it is not the final chapter of our lives.

    7

Psalm 55:22: "Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved."

The weight of grief and loss can feel overwhelming, but Psalm 55:22 offers solace in reminding us that we do not have to carry our burdens alone. God invites us to cast our sorrows upon Him, confident that He will provide the strength and support needed to sustain us. Moreover, He promises to protect and preserve those who seek His refuge. This verse serves as an invitation to entrust our pain to the caring hands of our Heavenly Father.

    8

Psalm 139:13-16: "For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them."

Psalm 139:13-16 offers a profound reflection on the sanctity of life and God's intimate involvement in our formation. Which, for someone whose baby didn’t seem to be formed right, this passage can be a difficult one to grasp. These verses affirm that every life, including those lost through miscarriage or child loss, holds immeasurable value and significance. Even before our physical existence, God knew and cherished us. This passage serves as a reminder that our departed child has left an indelible mark on our lives, and their purpose was not in vain but it is ongoing.

    9

Revelation 21:4: "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."

The book of Revelation offers a glimpse of the future glory and eternal hope that awaits believers. In Revelation 21:4, we are assured that God will ultimately wipe away every tear from our eyes. In His presence, there will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain. These words provide a vision of the ultimate healing and restoration that God has in store for His children. While we may currently grapple with sorrow and loss, we can find solace in the promise that a time is coming when all our pain will be transformed into everlasting joy.

These nine Bible verses to comfort a grieving mother serve as reminders of comfort and hope. They remind us of the fact that God does not stand aloof from our pain and that His powerful Word provides strength and sustenance in the midst of unbearable heartache.

I encourage you to take the time to really read and study these verses, allowing them to penetrate your heart and bring reassurance. It is through the transformative power of God's Word that we can find solace, healing, and the ability to extend comfort to others who are walking a similar path.
