5 Truths About Your Identity In Christ

New Mercy Moms - 5 Truths Identity in Christ

Have you seen the new hashtags going around? #iam #iamloved #iamworthy #iampowerful #iamenough Ok, so maybe it isn’t new. It seems nice and all, and positive affirmations might actually help meet a heart need. But -- I would like to offer a word of caution -- this can be dangerous!

What? No, I’m not overreacting. These types of positive affirmations might have some truth to them — which is why they may help to temporarily meet a heart need. But, dear friend, realize if there’s only some truth then what do you call the rest? Lies, deceit, falsehood?

On top of that, how do you know for sure what is true and what isn’t? Are you willing to waste time (at best) or waste your life (at worst) because your identity and decisions were grounded on a shaky foundation?

Love, let’s compare positive affirmations with the Bible.

My identity is too important to base it on a bunch of half truths or full blown lies. But I’ll be the first one to tell you that I do it all. the. stinking. time. 🤦🏻‍♀️

So, this post started as “Notes to self”, but if the Bible is correct then I know I’m not the only one who struggles with identity (1 Corinthians 10:13).

I have to hold onto Truth, not half truth (aka delusion). I realize this may seem harsh, but these are truth bombs I need to hear as well. How can I find sure hope in a delusion? I can’t.

That’s why I have to dwell on Truth from God. I do not have the power of self improvement. I do not have the authority to define my own identity.

When I look to myself or in my own heart, I see deadness, neediness, inadequacy, and brokenness. I can’t save squat.

I NEED SOMEONE TO SAVE ME.

The saving needs to come from outside of me. This definitely includes salvation from sin, but also from the depths of sorrow and pain.

You who are going through deep pain, look to the cross and be silent. Find your identity in the One who redeemed you.

Sister, let’s throw out the half-truth hashtags and boast in our identity in Christ! Let’s be firmly rooted in God’s Word!

And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
- I Corinthians 1:30-31

1. I AM A NEW CREATION

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
- 2 Corinthians 5:17

2. I AM CHOSEN BY GOD, HOLY AND BELOVED

Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. - Colossians 3:12

3. I AM A WORK OF GOD (HIS WORKMANSHIP)

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
- Ephesians 2:10

4. I AM AN HEIR OF GOD AND FELLOW HEIR WITH CHRIST

And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
- Romans 8:17

5. I AM NOT THE “I AM”, I AM WHAT I AM BY GOD’S GRACE ALONE

Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
- John 8:58

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.
- 1 Corinthians 15:10

As a mom who’s suffered the loss of my baby, I know deep heart pain.

I tried to run from God, but he convinced me of his love and comforted my heart with hope and healing in Jesus.

Now, it’s my mission to share this same comfort with others who’ve experienced the pain of miscarriage and infant loss.
