A Prayer For The Waiting Woman

New Mercy Mom - Prayer for the waiting woman infertility journey

Dear Sister,

Waiting can be super hard. Whether it’s waiting for love, marriage, children, health, comfort, peace… The best thing we can do is communicate with God.

Listen to His voice through His Word and respond in prayer. I encourage you to click the verse links to read the verses. Most link to Bible websites, but a couple lead to art prints I’ve done.

Originally, this was my own prayer as I wept over our long wait for children. For about 7 years, my husband and I have hoped and prayed for biological and adopted children. Holding our 2 week old son as he left us to be with Jesus, waiting month after month for that second line on a pregnancy test, and watching the year slowly roll by hoping to hear from our adoption agency. Waiting can wear ya down, friend. Do you feel it too?

Does your waiting seem long and unbearable? Girl, I’m in the same boat, so this is a prayer for both of us.

Oh Father, what do we do?

We’ve been under this pressure of waiting for longer than we can bear. Far longer. We long to surface just enough to get a breath of fresh air with a little hope for the future. Yet, we realize that for us to last even this long is a sign of your grace producing endurance (Romans 5:3-5). But, Father, you know the pain is deep. How can we be comforted in our affliction? Will you comfort us? Will you comfort us?

A great fear has come upon us. (Job 3:25) Some of us had, and lost. And we all fear we will never receive.

“I WILL REMEMBER THE WORKS OF THE LORD;
YES, I WILL REMEMBER YOUR WONDERS OF OLD.” PSALM 77:11

What grace have we seen in the past? In the past you’ve sat with us while we wept. (John 11:35) In the past, You pursued us in our running and found us in our hiding. (Matthew 18:12)  And though I forget all too easily, it’s true that you have turned days of mourning to days of peace. (Psalm 30:11, Psalm 119:165)

“MY FLESH AND MY HEART MAY FAIL,
BUT GOD IS THE STRENGTH OF MY HEART
AND MY PORTION FOREVER.” PSALM 73:26

What grace have you given for this moment? You’ve provided food and water and a warm shelter. The Son is near us. (John 1:14) The Spirit is in us. (John 14:16-17) And the Father is for us. (Matthew 10:29-31) You have reminded us again to not put our hope in dreams but in the reality of Jesus and his resurrection. (1 Peter 1:3)

“SET YOUR HOPE FULLY ON THE GRACE
THAT WILL BE BROUGHT TO YOU
AT THE REVELATION OF JESUS CHRIST.” 1 PETER 1:13B

What grace do you promise for the future? You promise that somehow even this trial is for our ultimate good, no matter how hard the pill is to swallow (2 Corinthians 4:17). You promise that the comfort you give us we will be able to use to comfort others (2 Corinthians 1:3-7). That’s a good promise -- that somehow this pain won’t go to waste but will be used to point others to God as well.

“DELIGHT YOURSELF IN THE LORD,
AND HE WILL GIVE YOU THE DESIRES
OF YOUR HEART.” PSALM 37:4

Father, the desires of our hearts are not being fulfilled. But you said they would be if You are our delight and desire. So this frustration we feel, this anxious waiting, is a tell-tale sign that our hearts are not looking to you.

Oh God, please forgive! Cleanse and renew our hearts! (Psalm 51) We believe, help our unbelief. (Mark 9:24) Please open our eyes to your beauty. (Psalm 27:4) For we know that when we see you we will fall in worship and joy. (Psalm 34) Help us to desire you above all else, even ______________ (fill in with what you’re waiting for: children, marriage, health, etc.). (Psalm 73:25)

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

As a mom who’s suffered the loss of my baby, I know deep heart pain.

I tried to run from God, but he convinced me of his love and comforted my heart with hope and healing in Jesus.

Now, it’s my mission to share this same comfort with others who’ve experienced the pain of miscarriage and infant loss.
